Where in the World is Bilbo: Lincolnshire, England!

P1030643

Bilbo has rested and recovered from his jet lag after having been delivered via the tender ministrations of his last Hostess, the lovely Catherine of A Gardener in Progress

Here is an account of Bilbo’s tour of my garden here, with sincere apologies to Jane Austen and much indebtedness to the Chapters 43-45 of Pride and Prejudice.

P1030825

And so here it is…the tale of my garden, Bilbo and Miss Austen in….

Gardens and Gardenability

******************************************************************************************************

On reaching the house, he was shewn through the hall into the garden-room , whose eastern aspect rendered it delightful for summer. Its windows, opening to the ground, admitted a most refreshing view of the garden behind the house. Bilbo, after slightly surveying it, went to a window to enjoy its prospect…
P1030813

Bilbo looked out of the house for the first appearance of the gardens with some petruberation…

P1030676

…when once he entered his spirits were in a high flutter.

P1030667

Bilbo was delighted.

P1030665

He had never seen a place for which nature had done more…

P1030821

…or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste.

P1030659

Bilbo’s mind was too full  for conversation…

P1030649

…but he saw and admired every remarkable spot and point of view.

P1030644

At that moment he felt that to be master of this garden would be something!

P1030822

He entered the woods…

P1030645

…where the opening of the trees gave the eye power to wander…

P1030646

…and were many charming views….

P1030647

In the Long Rose Border Bilbo was lively and unreserved, and danced every dance:

He expressed a wish of going round the whole garden, but feared it might be beyond a walk.

P1030826

He was told that it was almost an acre all round.

P1030650

The day passed most pleasantly away….

P1030657

….the morning in bustle,

P1030653

and the evening at one of the theatres.

P1030677

As Bilbo walked across the lawn towards the house, he turned back to look again ….

P1030817

…and while he was conjecturing as to the date of the building,  Miss Austen herself suddenly came forward.

P1030806

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was her appearance that it was impossible to avoid her sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush. She absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immoveable from surprise; but shortly recovering herself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Bilbo, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.

Bilbo had instinctively turned away; but, stopping on her approach, received her compliments with an embarrassment impossible to be overcome.

Miss Austen then asked him to walk into the house; but he declared himself not tired, and they stood together on the lawn. At such a time much might have been said, and silence was very awkward.

He wanted to talk, but there seemed an embargo on every subject. At last he recollected that he had been travelling, and they talked of Western Washington and Winnipeg with great perseverance. He was pressed to go into the house and take some refreshment.

P1030795

The next variation which his  visit afforded was produced by the entrance of  tea, cake, and a variety of all the finest fruits in season…There was now employment for the whole party — for though they could not all talk, they could all eat…

P1030791

The occurrences of the day were too full of interest to leave Bilbo  much attention  and he could do nothing but think, and think with wonder, of Miss Austen’s civility…..

My Dear Mister Bilbo,
It is with the greatest delight that I read of your tour of the enchanting estate in Lincolnshire; where you are spending some days of late, in the company of Miss Austen. If it pleases you, we would be honoured and delighted to shew you the best aspects of our own shire, here in Suffolk.
With my my respectful good wishes,
Mistress C

(Don’t enter me as I’ve already had him.)

Thanks Ginger, it was fun figuring it all out ;-) And bless my daughter for making the cakes!

I don’t think he’s going to want to leave! I wouldn’t if I were him. I loved your writing and tour. Your gardens are beautiful. Looks like he and Miss Austen really hit it off :) Can’t wait to see where he goes next.

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Me neither-this is such fun!

  jessica wrote @

Oh biblo looks like he’s having fun! I wish it were as easy for me to go to England. Just jump in a box go to the post office. LOL

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Snap for me to go to the US again….*sigh*.

  Victoria wrote @

What a great story! Wonderful, just wonderful. Such an imagination. Bilbo looks to be having a splendid time in jolly old England. (And his dancing is much to be admired!)
Don’t pick me, I’ve already had him.

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Thank you! He is a fine dancer isn’t he? Who knew? LOL

  Cathy Allen wrote @

First, don’t enter me, as dead grass and one blooming rose bush plus 3 barely-hanging-on don’t consitute a garden! (but at least the one is still happily blooming!) I’m a garden-lover, not a gardener!

Second, I love your story, and your video especially. Leave it to you, Julie, to be so witty! Miss Austen would be amused, I think.

Third, from the little I’ve read about Tolkien, I think he’d be amused, too!

Bilbo is a lucky guy to get to be there “in person” (so to speak).

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Oh I do hope she approves….I’d hate to face her wrath!!LOL

  Cathy Allen wrote @

Seeing your picture last week of Bilbo resting from his jetlag, and Miss Austen looking on, I was thinking, “I wonder if Jane and J.R.R. would be friends?” I don’t know enough to venture an opinion.

And you are surely right, of course, I tremble to think of how she could skewer me with her pen…but I do feel that surely she would LOVE your garden, and thus, you would be granted immunity from her displeasure! (From anyone’s displeasure, actually!)

I’ve cleaned out the guest room, so if Bilbo would like to visit me here in Michigan, I’d love to have him.

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Well then let’s see if you win …your name is in the draw and so now its all in the hands of fate, or rather The French Scholar, AKA my husband ;-)

  mcl wrote @

I would hate to tear Bilbo away from England back to the states. But I’m going to t ry!!

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

OK! Your name is in the hat!

  MJK06 wrote @

love all the pics of Bilbo hehe…dont let him go back!

  EB wrote @

Wow. Just found your blog – what a an amazing garden. I want! Well no, that’s too disloyal to our own, but one day, I’d love to make something like that.

I would love to welcome Bilbo here, but I think your respondent who wrote the suitable Austenian reply should get him!

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Thanks for the compliment! its been hard work but its finally getting to look right..after nearly 20 years ;-) Im performing the draw for the next recipient of Bilbo soon- all names are being put in my old gardening hat ;-)

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

But..he has to go on, poor little soul ;-) He loves to travel in the summer months…..

  Karen wrote @

I’m afraid I can’t host Bilbo as I live in an apartment building, but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your account of his sojourn in Lincolnshire.

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Thank you, Karen ;-)

  flowergardengirl wrote @

He is spoiled for sure now. He’ll never get Jane off his mind. He might like the friendship of our Valley Dale Pig. If he comes my way, I’ll introduce them.

Your garden is just amazing. Did you say only an acre? I thought 10 for sure. Looks really big with it’s rooms and walkways. Very pretty.

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

Yes, only an acre ;-) But its all packed in there…now if I could just buy the next two fields………

  imogen88 wrote @

Utterly brilliant, Julie! (Big grin ;-) )

  myenglishcountrygarden wrote @

I couldnt have done it without the help of Our Miss Austen ;-)
